| Diane Taylor Reveals Her Secrets | | Recently, Lucynda Storey interviewed Diane Taylor for her newsletter, The World of Cyn . Diane shared laughs and secrets with Lucynda's readers.
LS: Diane, how did you come to be in this crazy writing business:
DT: Oh, I wouldn’t exactly call it crazy… okay, it is. How I came about doing what I do now is actually my husband’s fault. He came home from work and said, “You have to check out this website. You’ll enjoy this.”
He knew I had been writing adult fan fiction at a freebie site and figured this would be fun. The website? NaNoWriMo . Otherwise known as National Novel Writing Month. These insane people put pen to paper… or fingers to keyboard.. At Midnight on November 1st and their goal is to write a 50 K word novel by November 30th.
That’s where Shadow Demon came from. That was actually 4 years ago. So I’m DEFINITELY crazy about writing. Oh yeah, and I still write adult fan fiction for that freebie site. Literotica.com under the handle of BardsLady.
LS: How did your first published book come about? Where’d the inspiration come from; how long did it take you to write; and how long did you wait for a publisher to contract it?
DT: *rubbing hands together and grinning evilly* Oh goodie. Well, I signed on with Triskelion publishing after Gail, their executive editor, looked over Shadow Demon and told me she wanted it. The fun part was, she asked me if I could whip up a short novella. I said yes and, well, there was a discussion of Greek themed stuff going on over the Triskelion Yahoo group and I said.. “What if? What would happen if the Female Goddesses get tired of hearing about the macho conquests of mortal women on earth.”
I know it sounds weird, but I had just finished watching XXX with Vin Diesel and I liked the idea of banishing a Sea God to an island off the coast of Bora Bora. But that’s just me. I really wanted to punch holes in male god egos and bring them down to earth, so to speak.
The book’s name is: Poseidon's Heart .
LS: What is your favorite genre to write? Why?
DT: Paranormal Romance.
This is my favorite genre to write because the only restrictions you have is your own imagination. There’s a lot you can do with Paranormals. No matter what I’m writing, I find myself adding that touch of mystery and unknown.
You can take almost anything and turn it into a paranormal object. I like to go beyond the usual Vampires, Werewolves, Ghosts, etc. When an idea hits, I go running through the internet for the most oddball tidbit of information I can get. Sometimes it’s hilarious, sometimes it’s really strange, but it fits. And that’s the beauty of it.
LS: What is the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome with your writing?
DT: Distractions. I’m very easily distracted by interesting things. If I get going on something and someone distracts me, I get annoyed. Problem is, I can’t ignore it. It usually is a gentle reminder by my room mate that I’ve forgotten to do something around the house, mow the lawn, do minor repairs on something around the house… something like that. Once that happens, it’s a long while til I can get back to writing.
LS: How do you make time to write?
DT: I usually wait until everyone has gone to bed at Midnight or so, then settle down to write while a good movie is on the TV set. Lots of my writing goes on late at night when no one needs me for anything and I can relax.
LS: What/who encourages you when you’re down?
DT: Hmmm, Lots of different people. My mom, my husband, my room mate. I’ve got several people over the internet that, no matter what, will send me funny stories, goofy pictures and the like. At least one of them is guaranteed to bring a smile to my face.
If all else fails, my husband threatens to give me a tattoo. :D Actually, that’s what he does for a job.
LS: Let’s do some favorites…what is your favorite color; food; actor; animal; place; sound?
DT: *laughs* Ah the fun stuff. Well, my favorite color is green. The darker the shade the better. Food? Food is always good. Ben and Jerry’s Black and Tan ice cream tops the list. Sushi runs a close second. Good stuff. Actor? Aww, Gee…. Do I have to choose just ONE? You make it very hard. I have a lot of favorite actors. I can’t really choose. :D
I wont choose just one animal because I enjoy them all. Places.. Another hard one. I’d really like to visit Japan and tour the castles there. I’m very fond of the Samurai Culture. Sounds? Tibetan chanting and Didgeridoos. The deep resonating tones makes me feel relaxed.
LS: What was the scariest thing you’ve ever experienced? Have you used it in any of your stories?
DT: The Scariest? Oh yes, I have used it in one of my stories but the incident is something I’d rather not share at this point and time. Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty at the time.
LS: What book did you read as a child that you’ve never forgotten? Why was it so memorable?
DT: Hmmm. I think the most memorable book I read when I was a kid was White Fang by Jack London. Not the movie version, the book was a first edition original print. The reason it was so memorable is because it was the very first book I ever read that didn’t have pictures in it. It awakened my imagination and took me away from the present day and into the life of a Wolf named White Fang. I never regretted not having the pictures to go with it because my brain supplied all the imagery I needed.
LS: What is a day like in the life of Diane Taylor?
DT: I’m usually up at 8 to feed the dogs. After that it depends on what’s on the menu for the day. E-Mail, Housework, Laundry. I’m not going to go into details because I really don’t want your readers to fall asleep on me. *chuckling*
LS: What is your most recent release? Where can readers purchase it?
DT: Actually, I have two out that were released around the same time:
Ares in Chains - The sequel to Poseidon’s Heart.
My other book is called Mystique Rogue and it is published by Silk’s Vault Publishing.
LS: Where can readers find out more about your writing?
DT: Well, you can join my Yahoo group: Jade Kitsune.
It’s a general discussion group I created. I post release announcements and fun jokes there.
You can also go check out my website Diane Taylor. A word of warning, though. If you are under 18, stay out of the Adult area.
Thank you so much for allowing me the honor of being interviewed by you. I enjoyed it very much and I hope your readers enjoy it as well.
